Onions are one of India's most exported fresh vegetables, and for good reason: strong pungency, vivid colour and a long shelf life when properly cured. If you run a wholesale, retail or food-service supply business, Indian onions can be a dependable, well-priced line — provided you specify the right type, size and packing up front.
The main onion types
- Red onion: The most exported Indian onion — deep colour and sharp flavour, popular across the Gulf and Asia.
- White onion: Milder, used in processing, salads and certain cuisines.
- Pink onion: A lighter red shade, valued in specific markets.
Sizing matters
Onions are graded by diameter. Common export sizes are 35–45 mm, 45–55 mm, 55–65 mm and 65 mm+. Larger sizes usually command higher prices and suit retail; smaller sizes suit catering and processing. Decide the size band your customers expect before you order.
Curing and shelf life
A well-cured onion travels well. A poorly dried one sprouts or rots before it reaches your shelf.
Good exporters cure (dry) onions properly to reduce moisture in the outer skin, which dramatically improves keeping quality during sea transit. Ask how the onions are cured and stored, and whether cold storage backs year-round availability.
Packing and container loading
Onions are typically packed in 5, 10 or 20 kg mesh (net) bags that allow airflow, sometimes in jute bags or cartons for premium retail. Ventilated or refrigerated (reefer) containers are used depending on distance and climate. For long voyages to Europe or North America, discuss reefer settings and ventilation to avoid heat build-up and condensation.
Quality checks before shipment
- Firmness: No soft, sprouting or doubled bulbs.
- Skin: Dry, intact outer skins with good colour.
- Uniformity: Consistent size within the agreed band.
- Cleanliness: Free from excess soil and damaged bulbs.
Buyer's quick checklist
- Pick type (red/white/pink) and size band
- Confirm curing and packing (mesh bag weight)
- Choose ventilated vs. reefer container
- Agree Incoterms, price and inspection point
- Request photos/video of the actual lot before loading
Documentation
As with all fresh produce, you'll need a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and a phytosanitary certificate. Our documentation checklist walks through each one.
